Tournament Seeding Explained

Seeding is the step everyone skips and then argues about. Get it right and the bracket protects the best teams from meeting in round one; get it wrong and your two strongest entries knock each other out before lunch.

This guide explains what seeding actually does, how the standard bracket order is constructed, and what each of the seeding modes in the bracket builder does to your field.

What seeding is for

A seed is just a rank: seed 1 is the entry you believe is strongest, seed 16 the weakest. Seeding does not change anyone's chances of winning a match - it changes who they have to beat, and in what order.

The goal of a seeded bracket is straightforward: the strongest entries should meet as late as possible. If seeds 1 and 2 are genuinely the best two, a bracket that puts them in the same first-round match wastes the event, because one of them goes home before the tournament has really started.

The opposite goal is just as real. A first round of 1-vs-2, 3-vs-4 and so on produces four excellent matches and then a semi-final between the two weakest survivors. Seeding trades early drama for a final that means something.

How the standard bracket order is built

The familiar layout - 1 plays 16, 8 plays 9, 4 plays 13, 5 plays 12 - looks arbitrary and is not. It comes out of one rule applied over and over: in every match, the two seeds must add up to one more than the bracket size.

The construction is recursive. Start with a two-slot bracket: [1, 2]. To double it, walk the existing order and after each seed insert its partner, the seed that completes the sum. From [1, 2] a four-slot bracket becomes [1, 4, 2, 3]. From that, an eight-slot bracket becomes [1, 8, 4, 5, 2, 7, 3, 6]. That is exactly the order the bracket builder generates, and it is where every published bracket layout comes from.

The property this preserves is the one that matters: at every round, the highest remaining seed meets the lowest remaining seed, assuming no upsets. Seed 1 and seed 2 are placed in opposite halves and cannot meet before the final. Seeds 1 through 4 are in four different quarters and cannot meet before the semi-finals.

Where your seeds come from

The bracket engine will happily seed whatever order you give it. Deciding that order is your job, and it is a judgement call rather than a calculation.

For a league playoff, the regular-season standings are the obvious source and the fairest one, because everyone had the same opportunity to earn their position. For a one-day open event with no history, ranking is guesswork, and pretending otherwise creates a bracket that looks authoritative and is not.

There is an honest middle ground: seed the entries you genuinely know something about, and randomise the rest. A field where the top four are ranked and the remaining twelve are drawn at random is more defensible than one where all sixteen positions imply a confidence nobody has.

  • League playoff - seed from the standings; it is the fairest source available.
  • Open event with returning entrants - seed the known quantities, randomise the rest.
  • Completely unknown field - randomise. A random draw everyone watched beats a ranking one person invented.
  • Recurring event - last edition's finish is a reasonable starting point, adjusted for who has changed.

The seeding modes, and what each one does

The builder gives you three ways to set the order. As entered takes the list exactly as you typed it, top to bottom - the right choice when your list is already a ranking. Shuffle randomises the order before the bracket is built, which is the right choice when you have no basis for ranking anyone and want that to be visible. Manual lets you drag entries into position, which is what you want when you are seeding from standings but need to override a placement.

There are also presets that reorder the field before seeding. Reverse flips the list, which is useful when your source is sorted weakest-first. Alphabetical is a neutral order that at least is not arbitrary. Spread affiliations pushes entries that share a club, school or team into different parts of the bracket, so teammates do not meet in round one.

That last one is worth calling out, because it is the seeding decision most organisers actually care about and the one hardest to do by hand. Nobody wants two players from the same club drawn against each other first - they came to play everyone else.

Whichever mode you use, the bracket order above is applied afterwards. The mode decides who is seed 1; the seed order decides where seed 1 sits.

What seeding cannot do

Seeding is a prediction, and predictions are wrong. A bracket that protects seed 1 all the way to the final only helps if seed 1 really was the strongest entry; if your ranking is guesswork, the bracket is faithfully protecting a guess.

It also does nothing about the fundamental unfairness of a knockout: one bad match ends a good team's tournament. If that is your worry, seeding is the wrong lever. A double-elimination bracket gives every entry a second life, and a round robin removes the question entirely by having everyone play everyone.

Finally, seeding cannot fix an awkward field size. If you have 12 teams, four of them will start with a bye no matter how you rank them - where those byes land is a seeding consequence rather than a seeding choice, and it is covered in the guide on byes.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the 1 seed play the last seed?

Because the bracket is built so that the two seeds in every first-round match add up to one more than the bracket size. In a 16-slot bracket that pairs 1 with 16, 2 with 15, and so on. The effect is that the strongest entries meet as late as possible rather than knocking each other out early.

What is the standard seed order for an 8-team bracket?

How do I stop teammates meeting in the first round?

Use the spread-affiliations preset. It reorders the field before seeding so that entries sharing a club, school or team are pushed into different parts of the bracket. It is the seeding job that is most tedious to do by hand and the one organisers most often want.

Does seeding make a tournament fairer?

It makes the later rounds more meaningful by keeping the strongest entries apart early, but it does not change anyone's chance of winning an individual match, and it cannot rescue a ranking that was guesswork. If your concern is that one bad match ends a good run, the fix is a different format rather than better seeding.
